I’ll never profess to be an expert when it comes to breeding. My knowledge is somewhat limited to the stallions and broodmares that come to mind from their former racing days. But all that is going to change (slowly, probably). On October 1 I will attend the Lexington-Selected sale with the hopes of expanding my horizons and bringing some insight to the DRF Harness audience on the happenings at the sale. So, you can look forward to some increased coverage, especially on the first two days when the best horses usually strut through the sales ring.

I’m not easily excited. And as much as I love harness racing, I can hardly recall ever going to the track and feeling chills down my spine. That is until Thursday on Little Brown Jug Day. The Delaware County Fair doesn’t offer the best racing card or the highest purses. You get a grassroots experience with an actual crowd enjoying every bit of the action. There are no scowling faces or disgruntled bettors. Everyone in attendance just seems happy to be in Delaware, Ohio for a day at the races.

Captaintreacherous is no doubt a potentially great horse. Although there has been plenty of talk about whether his connections should have skipped the Little Brown Jug for a potential walk-in-the-park prep at Hoosier Park, I just don’t understand why people are so upset.

There are plenty of topics to cover this week and I have an opinion on all of them. Let’s start with the controversial non-disqualification in the Metro Pace final. Driver Sylvain Filion was trapped along the cones with eventual winner Boomboom Ballykeel and tried to find room in mid-stretch to angle out. He moved slightly to his right and quickly corrected back into position when room was unavailable. At the same time that Boomboom Ballykeel moved to his right, Lets Drink On It, driven by Jim Morrill,Jr., moved a hair to his left.

The stakes spotlight shifts to Mohawk Racetrack this weekend as it hosts three major races. The $451k Shes A Great Lady, $683k Metro and $651k Canadian Pacing Derby highlight a strong 12-race card that also features the usual $75,000 guaranteed pick four pool starting in race four. In recent weeks the total pool has been hovering around the guarantee level, but with a card full of stakes you can bet that the pool will top $100,000 on Saturday.
