In every walk of life there are hot topics. Trending right now in the standardbred world is the ongoing debate for Horse of the Year. The majority of fans and voters are divided between two corners – Captaintreacherous and Bee A Magician. It is worth noting that waiting just on the outskirts for misfortune to strike the top pair is I Luv The Nitelife. [DRF HARNESS: Sign Up for the FREE DRF Harness Newsletter Today!]

I could write at length about each of the Breeders Crown races being contested at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Saturday (first post is 5 pm), but you can certainly find my analysis on this site.

There are 18 Breeders Crown elimination races scheduled at Mohegan Sun Pocono on Friday and Saturday. Typically elimination races do not make for the best wagering events, but after looking them over, I have uncovered seven horses that are worth watching. Use your judgment at post time to decide whether the price is worth the risk. Good luck if you are playing this weekend! You can watch all the action live on DRF. Friday Race 4 - #5 Lifetime Pursuit

Somehow I have followed harness racing for over 20 years and worked in the industry for 16 without ever attending a horse sale. Even if you don’t love horses, the experience is certainly interesting and entertaining. The action is fast-paced to say the least. You would think selling 100-160 horses would take a long time, but the auctioneers banged out 30-plus per hour and quite frankly it was like watching a good movie; time doesn’t matter.

While the highest priced yearlings may sell on day one in Lexington, there are plenty of potential big-money earners up for grabs on the final four days. Often enough breeders hold a few good ones over to day two just to avoid getting lost in the shuffle. Then there are those yearlings which mature in the weeks after they are programmed for sale. Their HIPs may be high but that doesn't mean their talent is low.
