The social media accounts of those involved in Standardbred racing blew up on Sunday night with the news that Sydney Seelster was claimed. For those in the dark (and to some extent, I was one of them), the mare is co-owned by Sydney Weaver, a remarkable 13-year-old girl with Cerebral Palsy who has a passion for racing.

There are two ongoing impasses between horsemen and track management that are wreaking havoc in the standardbred world. At Monticello Raceway, the horsemen have exercised their right to restrict the track from sending its simulcast signal outside of New York. In Illinois, both Balmoral and Maywood Parks have placed their racing seasons on hold (racing was supposed to begin Feb. 5) as horsemen and management haggle over purse cuts and recapture.

As someone who started following racing in the early 1990’s and was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Ohio racing has never played a major role for me—personally or professionally—outside of the Little Brown Jug or the rare stakes race at Northfield Park. But with Ohio now joining the slot-infused harness world, my attention (along with many others) seems bound to expand into the Buckeye state.

Few occurrences in racing bring about more controversy than a disqualification. Just like when a National Football League referee goes under the hood of the camera and rules in favor of one team or another, judges are entrusted with the unenviable task of deciding right from wrong on the track.
