Del Mar: The Wollan will be better next time

The Wollan, a first-time starter trained by Mike Mitchell, ran a credible fifth in his debut in Saturday's fifth race despite encountering trouble on the turn of a maiden race for 2-year-olds over 6 1-2 furlongs.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, The Wollan was on the rail turning for home and had to wait behind horses at an important time in the race. He finished evenly in the final furlong and was beaten 4 3-4 lengths by Shu Biz Danny ($6.20), the favorite. The Wollan was beaten 1 1-4 lengths by runner-up Lone Justice.

The Wollan is a California-bred by Tribal Rule. If he does not start before this meeting ends on Sept. 8, he is a horse to follow at Fairplex Park or Hollywood Park in the fall.

Race winner Shu Biz Danny is trained by Robert Troeger, who has won with three of his last five starters. His next starter is Raetodandy in Wednesday's second race.
