Del Mar: Valenzuela sweeps late double

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela swept the late double on Sunday, including a pick-up mount on the highly-promising J P's Gusto in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes.

Valenzuela guided J P's Gusto to a frontrunning win the Best Pal, holding off a late threat from Sway Away to win by a half-length. J P's Gusto finished 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:16.61. He has won three consecutive stakes, including two races at Hollywood Park earlier this summer.

Valenzuela's win on No Dream ($29.60) occured in a messy race for $12,500 claimers over 1 1-16 miles. Victorian Prince unseated jockey Felipe Valdez at the start and ran at the front of the field throughout the race. Victorian Prince drifted to the outside in the stretch, forcing Valenzuela wide on No Dream and Skellytown wide on David Flores.

No Dream caught Skellytown in the final strides to pull an upset, and cause a pick six carryover for Wednesday of $178,834.

Joe Carl, who finished third, was claimed by Doug O'Neill in a two-way shake. Gold Trim, who finished seventh, was claimed by Robert Lucas.
