Del Mar: Upsets in early double

Friday's early double returned $187.20 after favorites were beaten in the first two legs.

In the first race, for maidens, Zulu King ($22.80) outfinished an unlucky Chapman's Peak to win the six-furlong race by a half-length. Zulu King was trainer Bruce Headley's second winner of the meeting. Chapman's Peak was stuck behind pacesetter Greenspan in early stretch and was forced to wait a pivotal time on the turn. He had every chance to win in the stretch but could not hold off Zulu King.

In the second race, an optional claimer for 3-year-old fillies over a mile on turf, Westwood Pride ($13.80) caught pacesetter Holloween Candy and held off 4-5 favorite Blue Maiden to win by 1 1-4 lengths in the quick time of 1:33.69. Blue Maiden made her first start in the United States and ran a disappointing race, considering she had been second in two stakes in England in the spring and was unplaced in English and Irish 1000 Guineas in May.
