Del Mar: Upset to start pick 6


Last Sting, dismissed at 10-1, rallied wide through the stretch to win Wednesday's fifth race, the opening leg of a pick six that drew a pool of $239,539.

Ridden by Alonso Quinonez, Last String won by a head over Born Lucky, who finished a head in front of Simply Carina in the field of 10 turf maidens. Last Sting ($23.80) was timed in 1:36.50 over a mile.

Trained by John Sadler, Last Sting had not started since finishing second by a length as an odds-on favorite at Golden Gate Fields on May 20.

Last Sting won the final leg of a 50-cent pick five that paid $14,267 and a drew a huge pool of $348,428. The pick five pool was the highest non-carryover pool for the bet since it was launched on this circuit at the start of the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting in April.
