Del Mar: An upset and dead-heat in 4th

U.C. Merced Two ($25.40) won a four-hour photo to post an upset in Wednesday's fourth race for $8,000 claimers, the second leg of a seven-figure pick six.

U.C. Merced Two finished a neck in front of Thrice the Vice and Don Elias M., who were ruled to have finished in a dead-heat by track stewards. Photo finish cameras could not precisely pinpoint whether Thrice the Vice and Don Elias M., finished on even-terms because the body of jockey Agapito Delgadillo, who rode U.C. Merced Two, blocked a clear view of Don Elias M.'s nose from the perspective of the photo finish camera atop the grandstand. Therefore the stewards ruled that Thrice the Vice and Don Elias M. had finished in a "hidden-nose dead heat."

U.C. Merced Two was the second consecutive longshot in Wednesday's pick six, preceded by Warren's Judy ($48).

There were two claims in the fourth race. Thrice the Vice was claimed by Keith Craigmyle. Certified Diamond, the 3-2 favorite who finished sixth, was claimed by Genaro Vallejo in a five-way shake.
