Del Mar: Sutherland ends drought

Jockey Chantal Sutherland, who was at the center of attention last week for her participation in a match race with former fiancee Mike Smith, ended a 21-race losing streak in Wednesday's sixth race with a win aboard Izshelegal ($12.20).

Izshelegal closed from a stalking position to outfinish even-money favorite Born Lucky by a half-length, running 1 1-16 miles on turf in 1:43.24. Flawless Jewel finishesd third in the field of nine.

Izshelegal needed 10 races to beat maidens. As a 2-year-old last year, she was third in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes, fourth in the Grade 1 Darley Debutante and Oak Leaf Stakes and ninth in the Breederrs' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs. By Maria's Mon, Izshelegal gave trainer Terry Knight his first win of the Del Mar meeting with his second starter.

Sutherland has won five races at this meeting, which began on July 20. She finished second to Smith in the match race on Sunday. Prior to Izshelegal's victory, she was winless since July 31.

Izshelegal's win enhances the chances of a carryover. In the first four races of the pick six, favorites have been beaten.
