Del Mar: Spill mars third race

A one-horse spill involving the tiring pacesetter Rockstar Ben marred Thursday's third race.

Rockstar Ben was fading from contention in the final furlong when he broke down badly. Jockey Joe Talamo was unseated and scrambled under the rail. He was taken off the track in a stretcher and did not ride the fourth race. Talamo was replaced on Merrytagio by Rafael Bejarano.

Rockstar Ben, the longest shot in the field at 20-1, was euthanized.

The race was won by Gotham Devil ($7.20), who held off 9-5 favorite Greely's Ghost to win by 2 3-4 lengths, finishing a mile on turf in 1:34.57. The stewards conducted an inquiry into an incident entering the stretch, before Rockstar Ben was injured, focusing on a bumping incident between Lucky Fitz and Strikingly Sinful. The order of finish was not changed.

The third race was the first leg of a pick six that featured a carryover of $117,821. Bettors added $783,613 to the pool on Thursday.
