Del Mar: Speed works for Tales in Excess

Email

The first-time starter Tales in Excess won her debut against 2-year-old maiden fillies in Saturday's third race. Tales in Excess led throughout the 5 1-2 furlongs, a style of racing that seems to be advantageous early on Saturday's program.

Magnificent Blend ($9.20) won the first race over seven furlongs by staying close to the lead, while Tropic Storm led throughout the Windy Sands Handicap, running the fastest main track mile of the meeting - 1:35.84.

The upcoming fourth race is on turf, the final race before a pick six begins with a record three-day pick six carryover of $1,597,470.

Talex in Excess won the maiden race by 4 1-4 lengths in 1:03.35. The Tale of the Cat filly is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.
