Del Mar: Speed holds in early pick 3

The first three winners on Sunday all raced near the front, and were well-backed. This is a change in the dominant style for winners from Saturday, when several winners rallied from off the pace while wide.

Sunday, Avid ($4.20) won the first race for 2-year-old maidens, leading throughout. In the second race, Bandeira Union ($3.80), racing as a gelding for the first time, led throughout a $12,500 claimer for non-winners of two. In the third race, Hugs to All ($7.80) took the lead shortly after the start, and won a maiden claimer over six furlongs by a neck over Fortunate Appeal.

In the third race, Breakmark, making his first start since last summer, was claimed for $40,000 in a two-way shake by Steve Knapp. Breakmark finished last in the field of nine.
