Del Mar: Skippy Due wins four-horse opener

Skippy Due ($4.60) rallied four-wide in a field of four to win Thursday's first race for $10,000 claimers.

The race lost one starter at the gate when Wagels was scratched because of a cut stifle, according to track stewards. Wagels was 9-1 when he was withdrawn. Conga Rock was withdrawn on Thursday morning.

Skippy Due ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:17.59, finishing a nose in front of pacesetter So Behold, whow as a nose in front of Self Insured. Skippy Due was trainer Jack Carava's first winner of the meeting, with his 10th starter.

Even with only four starters, superfecta betting was available. The $1 winning combination - Skippy Due, So Behold, Self Insured and One Vote (2-4-1-3) - returned $21.10. There was no confusion about which runners to use, just how to line them up.
