Del Mar: Sir Bell ends drought

After appearing beaten on the turn, Sir Bell ($10) rallied to win a $10,000 claimer in Friday's sixth race, his first victory since April 2008.

Trained by Tom Blincoe for Richard Bell, Sir Bell, an 8-year-old gelding, had lost 18 consecutive races before Friday's breakthrough.

Ridden by Martin Pedroza, a late replacement for an ill Tyler Baze, Sir Bell was always near the front in the one-mile race. Sir Bell dueled with Man Chester Man on the turn, led briefly, was headed and then fought back on the inside to win by 2 1-4 lengths, finishing in 1:37.08.

Sir Bell was second in a $10,000 claimer here on July 22, closing well after encountering trouble on the turn.

There were two claims in the race. Straighttomidnight, who finsihed fifth, was claimed by Paul Schiewe. Lease of Life, who finished sixth, was claimed in a five-way shake by Linda Mikus.
