Del Mar: Sheer Talent shines in debut

The first-time starter Sheer Talent rallied wide through the stretch to win a six-furlong maiden race for 2-year-olds as a 18-1 outsider in Saturday's sixth race. Drill, a well-regarded first-time starter trained by Bob Baffert who was sent off as the even-money favorite, could only finish eight in a field of 10.

Sheer Talent ($39.80) was third with a quarter-mile remaining and outfinished second choice Cloud Hopper to win by a half-length in 1:10.68. The colt was ridden by Victor Espinoza.

Sheer Talent, a Wildcat Heir colt, is trained by Dan Hendricks for a partnership. It would be no surprise for Hendricks to start Sheer Talent in the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 7.
