Del Mar: North Fork rears at start; unseats Espinoza

North Fork, the 2-1 favorite, reared at the start of Thursday's second race for $12,500 claimers over 1 1-16 miles, unseating jockey Victor Espinoza. The jockey scrambled onto a ledge in the starting gate as North Fork galloped away, behind the remaining five runners.

The race was won by Pico Pico, who drew off in the final furlong to win by 5 1-4 lengths. Pico Pico ($15.20) was timed in 1:42.89. The start was the subject of a steward's inquiry. They decided that North Folk's stall opened simultaneously to the others. Espinoza was not injured, and walked away.

Pico Pico was claimed by trainer Vann Belvoir. Royal Import, who finished third, was claimed in a nine-way shake by trainer Bob Hess, Jr., who trained the gelding in the past. Low Gear Power, who finished last of the five finishers, was claimed in a three-way shake by Mike Mitchell.
