Del Mar: Mullins claims fifth race winner

For the second consecutive race, a winner on Thursday is switching barns.

Trainer Jeff Mullins claimed Light of a Star ($5.40) from an $8,000 claimer over six furlongs. Mullins prevailed in a five-way shake.

Ridden by Ramon Guce, Light of a Star won by three-quarters of a length over First Queen.

Light of a Star was trainer Chuck Treece's first career winner at Del Mar. Treece trains a stable of 40 Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos. Light of a Star, a 4-year-old filly, won a $5,000 claimer over 4 1-2 furlongs at Los Alamitos on July 9, the maximum claiming price and maximum distance allowed for Thoroughbreds at that Orange County track. Earlier this year, Light of a Star raced at Golden Gate Fields, Hollywood Park and Santa Anita, winning four of six starts.

Thursday's race was the sixth time that Light of a Star has been claimed in her last 11 starts. She has won 11 of 21 races.
