Del Mar: Mitchell equals milestone; Pick 6 pays $3,940

Trainer Mike Mitchell equaled Ron McAnally in the rankings for all-time winningest trainer in Del Mar history with two winners on Thursday - Diamond Journey ($3.40) in the sixth race and So Tough ($7.40) in the eighth race. Both Mitchell and McAnally have 436 career wins at Del Mar.

Mitchell has three runners on Friday and all but predicted he would take the lead in the rankings this weekend. "I've got a few chances," he said. "If I don't break it this weekend, I'll jump off the grandstand."

So Tough ($7.40) won a maiden race for $40,000 claimers over 5 1-2 furlongs by 10 1-2 lengths despite a tardy start. A 2-year-old by Old Topper, So Tough was claimed in a two-way shake by John Sadler. He was timed in 1:04.17 even though jockey Martin Garcia had him geared down in the final sixteenth.

The Mitchell runners were part of a pick six that paid $3,940. The other winners were Ignited ($4), Galleta Monstruo ($8), Courtney's Prize ($11.60), and California Nectar ($17).
