Del Mar: Hurricane Lake wins messy 1st

Hurricane Lake ($7.60) rallied from off the pace to catch Macho Dorado in deep stretch of Saturday's first race, in which six started but only five finished.

Red Sharp Humor, the slight 5-2 favorite, was pulled up in early stretch after jockey Patrick Valenzuela appeared to lose his balance, and did lose his irons, at the start. Valenzuela rode with his legs out of the stirrups until Red Sharp Humor was pulled up.

Hurricane Lake ran seven furlongs in 1:23.31, finishing a head in front of Macho Dorado. Offlee Wild Boys, ninth in the Santa Anita Derby last April, finished third. His trainer, Steve Miyadi lodged an objection against Macho Dorado, alleging that jockey Chantal Sutherland cost Offlee Wild Boys a placing because of a bumping incident in the stretch. The stewards disagreed.

There were two claims for $50,000 in the race. Hurricane Lake went to Mike Mitchell in a three-way shake. Red Sharp Humor went to Hector Palma in a two-way shake.
