Del Mar: Hopeful Union prevails

Hopeful Union ($10) won her second career race, and ended an eight-race losing streak, in Thursday's seventh race. A 4-year-old filly, Hopeful Union won an optional claimer by 1 1-4 lengths over Wild Rose, finishing a mile in 1:36.78.

Hopeful Union was ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, a replacement for Tyler Baze, who was taken off his mounts early Thursday when he did not take a Breathalyzer test ordered by track stewards.

Valenzuela had a tough start to the afternoon in the saddle. In the second race, he was aboard Lordgivemealift when the 5-year-old gelding broke down badly in the stretch of a five-furlong turf race. Valenzuela was limping for a few minutes after jumping off Lordgivemealift, and was cleared to ride after being examined in first aid.

Hopeful Union is trained by Ron Ellis for Mace and Samantha Siegel.

Wild Rose was claimed for $40,000 in a five-way shake by Bob Hess, Jr.
