Del Mar: Hess claims winner for $62,500

Ranger Heartley, who won an optional claimer in Sunday's fifth race, was claimed for $62,500 by trainer Bob Hess, Jr.Ranger Heartley earned $37,200 from the purse as well, making the fifth race a lucrative result for owners Dave and Herb Alpert.

Ridden by apprentice jockey Jesus Velazquez, Ranger Heartley led throughout a one-mile race on the main track, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of 2-1 favorite Diferentkindagreat in 1:36.30.

Ranger Heartley was claimed for $32,000 from a maiden race at Hollywood Park in July 2009, and won 4 of 10 starts for the Alperts and trainer John Sadler, including the California Derby at Golden Gate Fields in January. Sunday's race was his first start for a claiming price since he won a $32,000 maiden race for claimers at Del Mar last September in his first start for the Alperts.

Hess will have a tough act to follow. Ranger Heartley earned $164,920 in prize money for the Alperts.
