Del Mar: Gun Boat scores in debut


Gun Boat , a first-time starter, outfinished Basmati by a head to win Saturday's sixth race for 2-year-old maidens at Del Mar.

Gun Boat ($26.60) was ridden by Martin Pedroza and fought for the lead throughout. He was timed in 1:03.18 for 5 1-2 furlongs.

Norm's Passion, the 5-2 favorite, closed with a wide rally to finish third, 3 3-4 lengths behind Basmati.

Gun Boat was purchased for $150,000 at the Barretts May Sale of 2-year-olds in-training in Pomona, Calif. Owned by George Bolton and trained by Bob Baffert, Gun Boat is by Congrats.

Saturday's pick six is off to a difficult start for most bettors. Gun Boat won the second leg, preceded by Yankee Gone South ($21.60) in the fifth race.
