Del Mar: Final Mesa runs - for now

The undefeated 2-year-old filly Final Mesa is still part of the field for Friday's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes although owner-trainer Wesley Ward considered scratching her on Friday morning.

Final Mesa is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the Grade 3 race over 6 1-2 furlongs.

Ward said he consulted with Blake Heap, who starts horses on Ward's behalf in California, before the decision was made to start Final Mesa. Ward said he was concerned about Final Mesa's condition after her slow workout in 51.80 seconds last Sunday.

Final Mesa will be tested in the Sorrento. the race has drawn the first four finishers of the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park on July 11 - Dawnie Macho, Izshelegal, Belleofthebridle and She'll Heir - and two sharp recent maiden race winners A Z Warrior and Wickedly Perfect. Alienation, trained by Bob Baffert, will not start. A winner of a maiden race over five furlongs on turf in her only start, Aleination is expected to make her next start at Saratoga.
