Del Mar: Espinoza prevents accident


Jockey Victor Espinoza prevented a potential accident in Friday's fourth race when he was able to pull up the stricken pacesetter, and 2-1 favorite, Love At the Bay in the stretch of a maiden claimer over 5 1-2 furlongs.

Love At the Bay had the lead going by the eighth pole when she suffered an injury to her left foreleg. Espinoza was able to pull up the filly while staying near the rail. Fortunately, the only traililng runner affected was Alevei, who had to be steadied in traffic. Love At the Bay was euthanized, according to track officials. The filly was listed at 6-1 on the morning-line.

The first-time starter Yellow Slicker ($10) won the race by a neck over Warren's Lover. Yellow Slicker represents the second winner in as many days for owners Marty and Pam Wygod and trainer John Sadler. Yellow Slicker, bred by the Wygods, was claimed for $40,000 by trainer Terry Knight.
