Del Mar: Emerald Gold surprises

Emerald Gold, a second-time starter, rallied wide through the stretch of a maiden race over 5 1-2 furlongs to post a mild upset in Saturday's fourth race for 2-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Emerald Gold ($14.60) was timed in 1:04.47, and outfinished 21-1 runner-up Candy and Thunder by 2 3-4 lengths. Silent Saga finished third. She unseated jockey Victor Espinoza in the post parade, but neither the rider or the filly seemed fazed by the incient.

Cascina, the 9-5 favorite, could only finish seventh, while the 2-1 well-regarded first-time starter Regal Betty fading to finish last of eight.

Emerald Gold is owned by Glen Hil Farm, was purchased for $130,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Yearling Sale last year, and is trained by Tom Proctor. Emerald Gold finished seventh as a 18-1 shot in her debut at Hollywood Park on June 26.

For Gomez, Emerald Gold was his second consecutive win, preceded by an upset aboard Screaming Destiny ($26.60) in the third race.
