Del Mar: Elvis just misses the stage

Hey Elvis, the even-money favorite, finished a nose behind pacesetter Liberian Freighter in Wednesday's Harry Brubaker Stakes, a margin that was too close to call without a glance at the replay.

The finish may have been a case when jockey Rafael Bejarano left Hey Elvis with too much to do in the last quarter-mile. Liberian Freighter set a slow pace of 48.42 for a half-mile and 1:12.16 for six furlongs and led by 1 1-2 lengths at the eighth pole. Hey Elvis closed very well in the last sixteenth, and finished 1 1-4 lengths in front of third-place Quindici Man.

The Brubaker was Liberian Freighter's first stakes win since the Tiznow Stakes at Hollywood Park in April 2009.
