Del Mar: A day for Rosario, Baffert

Email

Jockey Joel Rosario won 4 of the first 10 races, and trainer Bob Baffert won two major stakes on Saturday's 11-race program, dominating their respective categories.

Rosario's four-win day left him tied with leader Rafael Bejarano with 41 wins at the meeting after Saturday's 10th race. (Bejarano was scheduled to ride the heavily favored California Nectar in the 11th race). The duel between those two figures to last until closing day, Sept. 8. Saturday, Rosario was particularly effective on Saturday with leaders, winning in that style aboard Bradium in the second race for turf sprinters, aboard Enriched in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile and on the Baffert-trained El Brujo in the Grade 1 Pat O'Brien Stakes for main track sprinters.

Baffert won three races on Saturday, including with Richard's Kid for the second consecutive year in the Pacific Classic and a maiden race for 2-year-olds with the promising Bull Creek, a Tale of the Cat colt. Saturday was by far Baffert's best day of the meeting. He went into Saturday's card with just seven wins at the meeting.
