Del Mar: Bull Creek wins, but watch others

A half-hour before Richard's Kid defended his title in the $1 million Pacific Classic, trainer Bob Baffert had his first California winner of the day with Bull Creek ($17.60). A horse to watch from that race is the unlucky Miles Long Gone, who broke slowly, raced as close as fifth and finished seventh, 4 1-4 lengths behind the winner.

Bull Creek led throughout under Luis Medina, finishing a head in front of an unlucky Switzers Da Man in 1:04.53 for 5 1-2 furlongs. Switzers Da Man was in traffic on the turn and rallied well when clear in the stretch. Third-place finisher Dixie Cross was the 5-2 favorite and had a wide trip before losing by three-quarters of a length.

Bull Creek was making his career debut for owners Hal and Patti Earnhardt. A colt by Tale of the Cat, Bull Creek was purchased for $150,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Bull Creek was ridden by Luis Medina, the jockey's first winner for Baffert in his second ride for the trainer.
