Del Mar: Brad Free's video preview and bankroll plays

EmailWednesday, July 21

Sure would like to be clever opening day by finding a longshot or two to kick things off. But it just won't happen on a card that looks uncomplicated.
So Day 1 will be simple, with win bets in three races. None are big prices. As custom, this column will offer daily plays totaling about $60, which will average down to $50 when some miss the minimum-odds requirement.

Let's get going, summer starts today.

Race 4

You'd have to be crazy to back a 0-for-19 maiden, right? Well, no. Lisa Lulu meets two vulnerable favorites (Maddyaboutyou, Tiz Smoke Tiz Fire) in this $25,000 maiden-claiming route. Lisa Lulu is vulnerable too, but at 4-1, her price is higher than her main opponents. Trainer Barry Abrams does super at Del Mar with horses by Unusual Heat.

The bet: $20 win Lisa Lula (minimum odds 4-1).

Race 6

In a decent N2X turf route for fillies and mares, two 6-1 shots are appealing. Gripsholm Castle is working fast and fires fresh; Catsalot drops to a better spot.

The bet: $10 win Gripsholm Castle and Catsalot (minimum odds 6-1). If only one reaches minimum odds, make it $20 win.

Race 10

The 2-year-old maiden-claimer Grand Maneuver ran super in his debut. He broke poorly, unleashed a middle move, finished evenly for third and galloped out in front. Now he gets an additional half-furlong and "most probable winner on the card" designation. Grand Maneuver is 5-2 on the line and a small bet at a small tick less.

The bet: $20 win Grand Maneuver.

That's it, win bets in three races. I know, not very creative. Don't worry, it's a long meet. See you Thursday.
