Del Mar: Bourbon Bay takes to Poly

Bourbon Bay made his second career start on a synthetic track in Friday's $125,000 Cougar II Handicap and took to the surface well, winning the marathon over 1 1-2 miles by 2 3-4 lengths.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Bourbon Bay was timed in track record time of 2:29.39. What made the performance so impressive was the way the 5-year-old gelding quickened in the final quarter-mile to pull clear. Bourbon Bay outran pacesetter Dahoud, who finished 1 1-2 lengths in front of 3-2 favorite Setsuko, who was third in the field of seven.

Setsuko was alongside Bourbon Bay in early stretch and appeared to have every chance but could not keep pace late.

Despite his win, trainer Neil Drysdale said that Bourbon Bay will revert to turf racing later at this meeting, with the $200,000 Del Mar Handicap over 1 3-8 miles on turf on Aug. 28 as a logical next race.
