Del Mar: All Star ride by Blanc

Email

All Star Heart ($4.60) overcame trouble in early stretch under jockey Brice Blanc to win a thrilling optional claimer for fillies and mares over a mile on turf in Thursday's seventh race.

Sent off favored, and the subject of a series of strong bets late that knocked down from 2-1 to 6-5 in the minutes before post, All Star Heart appeared doomed turning for home. She was behind horses at the back of a field of 10, with seemingly no clear path. Blanc took the patient approach, guided the filly to the inside near the eighth pole and got an immediate response to catch 8-1 Miss Mittagong and win by a head in 1:34.16. Berg Bahn finished third.

The trouble that All Star Heart avoided caught up with Chalula One and Madera Castana, who finished fifth and sixth. Chalula One was behind horses and in traffic at a pivotal time in early stretch. Madera Castana checked twice while racing on the inside through the final quarter-mile, losing all chance.

All Star Heart is trained by Ron McAnally and has won two consecutive races since returning from a five-month break at Hollywood Park on July 7. In February, All Star Heart slipped and fell in the stretch of a maiden race on turf at Santa Anita.
