Email

Mike Pender is the new trainer of fifth race winner Via Verde after winning a 19-way shake for the 4-year-old gelding after a $20,000 claimer over six furlongs on Thursday.

Via Verde ($6.60), who was sent off favored, rallied wide through the stretch under jockey Joel Rosario to win by 4 1-4 lengths. This is the second consecutive race in which Via Verde has been claimed. He was claimed by trainer John Sadler for $25,000 on June 10 and made his first start after that claim on Wednesday.

Sadler trained Via Verde until March when Gus Headley claimed him for $20,000 and raced him three times.

Also in Thursday's fifth race, runner-up El Scorpio was claimed by Drew Fulmer; Aliza's Dream, who finished sixth, was claimed by Roger Stein in a six-way shake; and eighth-place finisher Pack Your Bags was claimed by Jeff Metz.
