The battle for prize money in the first half of the NHC Tour is heating up. The top five players on the tour, ranked by tour points, as of July 31 will each receive $10,000. This is a change from previous years when the money awarded was more top heavy.

Women from California ruled the day on NHCQualify.com on Sunday. In a contest that consisted of 12 mandatory races and awarded four berths to the National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas, Jeannie King of Valencia finished in first place, and Jacqueline Sukanick of San Anselmo came in second. Also qualifying were Nick Kochanski of Mount Prospect, Ill., and Carl Gioio of Ossining, N.Y.

There is a one-day NHCQualify.com contest on Sunday, June 1, that will send up to five handicappers to the National Handicapping Championships in Las Vegas, to be held at the Treasure Island from Jan. 24-26, 2015. Buy-in for the qualifier is $165 and entries are limited to two per individual. The races have been announced:

The family that plays together, stays together. That’s how it was for Jacqueline Sukanick and her son Brent Sumja in last weekend’s NHCQualify.com contest. Sukanick finished first with a little assist from Sumja, the former trainer and 2013 National Handicapping Championship Tour champion, who finished 14th overall.
