Day 23: 8/23/09

3:45 pm: Last night was the Round Table dinner and this morning was the Round Table speech (see next post). In other words, I haven't made a bet yet today and I'm scrambling just to work up a little late pick-4 play for action.

I'm going to try Them There Eyes in the featured Yaddo if she's even half her 12-1 morning line. She's making her third start off a layoff; does her best running when there's some give in the ground, as there will be today; and has back races (like last year's Mt. Vernon) that are plenty good enough to win this.

Back in a while once I'm tied on.

5:45 pm: Them There Eyes dead last at 10-1. Yeesh. Didn't play the pick-4, and it's not looking good for a carryover into the last day of Week 4: Only the four longest shots in the finale (#'s 3,5,9,11) are uncovered in the pick-6.

In case you missed it, here's yesterday's 9th race with the six-way photo-finish:

6:05 pm: Make that three uncovered horses: #5, Being Queen, scratched with one minute to post.

6:15 pm: Glad I wasn't involved in the finale. I understand you're supposed to use every single horse that Linda Rice puts on the track up here, but this one was a stretch:

Stepping up from maiden-claiming to maiden-special off an eight month layoff, Shot Gun Gal wired the field -- at 3-1.

Those of us who try to gain an advantage by being smarter than the average bear and preying on the stupidity (or inexperience) of our fellow horse players really took one on the chin today. I'll call it "Pay to the Order of Stupid Day" at Saratoga. The first major play-against came in the third race when Solo Piano, coming off of a layoff, was announced to being wearing two bar-shoes. She won anyway at 3-2 as I threw away all of my Pick 3 tickets, live with the $32 firster. You didn't have to wait long until another great bet-against dropdown throwaway D'bigcat payed the uninformed masses a whopping $3.70. The biggest insult to injury however came in the off-the-turf nitecap that the gullible Linda Rice fans bet down to a ridiculous 3-1 for no other reason than it was a Linda Rice horse. Certainly we would get a free throw-out here. Wrong, Shot Gun Gal wired the field and the should be losers scored again. Very frustrating!!!

Great article about Steely Dan in the Sunday Chicago Tribune, written by rock critic Greg Kot. They come to town this week to perform Aja,Gaucho,The Royal Scam and the democratic-ever-dreaded "internet request night"

Well, those who hate to play pick-6's with steeplechases involved will love this Thursday's card. Typically, the New York Turfwriters Steeplechase has been the featured event, running as the next-to-last or last race on the card, requiring pick-six players to involve the steeplechase. But the entries are out for Thursday's card, and the featured race was scheduled as the third race on the nine race program. That means early pick-four players will have to involve the race, but late pick-four and six will be spared of the spontaneity that the steeplechase often yields.

9 times out 10 even with the naked eye you think you can call the winner of a tight photo. Not that one
