Todd Pletcher's patience was rewarded when GOLDEN LAD, making his second start off a long layoff, took down multiple Grade 1-placed RIDE ON CURLIN in the $100,000 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn Park. "He just kind of flattened out in the Pimlico Special and seemed a little jammed up coming out of it," Pletcher told Gulfstream Park publicity prior to Golden Lad's 2015 debut around a one-turn mile in the Grade 3 Hal's Hope Stakes on January 10. "We decided to stop on him and give him a little break.”

Although second to the quick CONSTITUTION in last Saturday's Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream, beaten favorite LEA ran another good one for trainer Bill Mott. Moving forward, he's the one I'll take out of the race. Speed horses excelled at Gulfstream that afternoon and Constitution grabbed the early lead from his advantageous inside post position. His rider, Javier Castellano, did a fantastic job backing down the pace with fractions of 23.31, 47.29 and 1:11.18 for six furlongs.

AVANZARE broke through with a career-best effort in last Saturday's Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes at one mile on turf at Santa Anita. Trained by the always-dangerous Tom Proctor, Avanzare handled a solid field that included millionaire ZA APPROVAL and graded stakes winners HOME RUN KITTEN, BACCELO, KAIGUN and EDGE OF REALITY.

CALCULATOR grabbed 10 additional Kentucky Derby points, and a long-overdue maiden win, with a visually-impressive victory over seven overmatched rivals in last Saturday's Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. Second to the promising AMERICAN PHAROAH in both the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes last year, Calculator was withdrawn from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile due to a bruised foot. Trainer Peter Miller then wanted to run Calculator in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity, but the gray colt missed that race because of illness.
