Convention Recap, HandiGambling PP's

Email

If tracks are measured by the people that work there, then Arlington Park is first-class all the way.

I'm pleased to say that FormBlog Convention was a rousing success thanks to the effort and diligence of several of our bloggers as well as the accommodating and talented staff at Arlington.

We were treated wonderfully with complimentary admission and box seating, a race named in our honor (complete with paddock and winner's circle access, trophy, and jockey goggles for the kids), and constant shout-outs from track announcer John G. Dooley and racing analyst Jessica Pacheco.

M. Scott McMannis and his lovely wife, Wendy, were, as always, gracious and welcoming.  I shared the Saturday morning handicapping seminar with Professor McMannis and am honored to call him my friend.

But, as most of you know, my travels are usually filled with some sort of drama.  Let's get to it.

Surprisingly, the flight out of LaGuardia was trouble-free.
Shockingly, my bag was the first out of the carousel.
Amazingly, I caught the shuttle bus to the rental car outlet as it was pulling away from the curb.

Nothing could stop me now.

"Honey, you got the wrong car," exclaimed a sweet woman at the rental car exit.

"Lady," I replied.  "Only an idiot could pick up the wrong car."

She looked my driver's license up and down, and then peered at me over the rim of her glasses.  She then checked the agreement license and turned to her friend.  She gave her one of those looks, a look that she knew that I was bluffing.  The friend looked at me before turning back to the lady and the friend knew that the lady knew that I knew that the lady knew that I was bluffing.

"Sir, what number was your assigned car?"

"F7...I think," I answered meekly.

Sir, this car is F17.  You're going to have to go back and get the right car."

I had tons of clever things to say, but instead I went with "Oh."

I went in reverse, to the dismay of the five drivers waiting patiently behind me, and returned to F17, where another employee was parked.

"Hey buddy," I yelled.  "I got the wrong car and you're in the spot.  I'm just going to leave it here, okay?"

"That's fine," the guy responded.

And I was on my way to F7.

"Hey buddy," he yelled.  "You may need this!"

I had left my wallet in F17.

Strike One.

Embarrassed, I drove away from the rental car agency, the woman's laughter ringing in my ears.  I made it to the hotel, checked in (got the right room, I'm proud to say), and proceeded to handicap the Saturday Arlington card on my dilapidated laptop.  After hours of agonizing internet delays, my growling stomach indicated that I hadn't eaten all day.

Off to the steakhouse next door.

An ex-girlfriend once told me that there's nothing sadder than a man that eats alone in a restaurant.  While I could think of lots of worse things, I have eaten alone many times in a restaurant and it doesn't feel good.  So, I decided to change things up a bit.

I ate alone at the bar.

Trust me, it's sadder this way.  The restaurant bar is a place for camaraderie, where regulars gather to have a drink, watch the game, and share a conversation.  The bar is not a place to have a full dinner of soup, bread, salad, and steak while taking up half of the wood.  It's safe to say I was an annoyance.

Across the bar smiled an old man with watery eyes.  He looked like a kind soul so I nodded in his direction.

The next thing I knew, he was on the floor.

My God, I've killed him.

At first, it looked like the elderly gentleman just had a few too many adult beverages.  Then, the sirens sounded, the paramedics came, and the man was helped out of the establishment.

Strike Two.

Saturday morning was looking good as I pulled out of the hotel parking lot.  That lasted a total of ninety seconds before the sky opened up and a torrential downpour began.  I pulled into the Trackside OTB lot, locked up, and got out of the vehicle sans umbrella.

Distinguished.
Classy.
Handsome.
A real gentleman.

That's how I hoped to make my first impression on some of my FormBlog faithful.

Soaking-wet dork running for cover wasn't on the list.

Strike Thr...but no.  It was a foul tip and I was still alive thanks to the great group of FormBloggers.  Not only are they sharp handicappers, but they are wonderful people as well.  FormBlog was created so a fraternity of horseplayers could get together, share insights and ideas, and hopefully, become friends.  My proudest accomplishment in this, often, crazy business, is that I've succeeded in that regard.

Comparing the Trackside OTB to some of the other Off Track Betting establishments I've frequented in my day is like comparing ice cream to horse manure.  The place is spotless, fan-friendly, has great food (from what I've been told), and is often packed to the rafters.  It was the perfect spot to meet and prepare for the day.

With Steve Taylor and Dylbert driving with me, the FormBlog group headed to the track where I gave my seminar with Professor McMannis.  Thanks to the morning deluge, we were off the turf and I'd like to make that my excuse for my poor handicapping.  It's no excuse, however.  I simply stunk.

Race 1 was an $18,000 claimer for fillies and mares, and I really liked #1 JODY'S INCLUDED, a Canterbury invader going turf to polytrack.  I believed that she was the lone speed and admired her most recent race in Minnesota.  In that spot, she chased a lone pacesetter early, made the lead briefly in the stretch, and ran on well to the wire while being run down by a solid closer.  Jody's Included did all the dirty work that day and figured to relax on the front end under leading rider Junior Alvarado.
Unfortunately, trainer Larry Rivelli had other plans.  With an uncoupled entry in the race, he sent TRIGGER FISH LANE, the weaker half, after Jody's Included.  They dueled through the first six furlongs before fading to the back of the pack.  That set things up for Lakeaway, who roared past them all to win impressively in hand.  Lakeaway has now won three of five starts on synthetic surfaces.  With a 3-7 record on dirt, she can be expected to make noise at Hawthorne if she remains in this good form.

After the first race, Professor McMannis took me down to the paddock for a quick in-house interview with Jessica and we talked about the importance of the FormBlog community.

The second half of the double was a $25,000 maiden claimer at five furlongs.  This race was washed off the turf and was a perfect example of early money tipping off a live debut runner.  PETERS ROCK, a Dayjur colt trained by Doug Matthews, opened up at odds-on despite being 8-1 on the morning line.  As is the case with many of these runners, Peters Rock drifted to a reasonable 5-2 and romped by six.  Radical Swing was a bad favorite off the March layoff.
Turnbackthealarm had the exacta with 15-1 Beaujack getting the place, partially thanks to Uncle Steve T's list of poly-pedigree sires.

After the chalks ran 1-2-3 in the third race, the FormBlog group was delighted when chicago gerry joined the party.  And he was on fire throughout the day, cashing many tickets including the late-running Six Pack Abs in the fourth.  I liked Garburetor, anticipating a hot pace up front.  I got the pace, but Garburetor didn't have any pop in the lane.  The veteran speedster, Foxie's Boy, may need a break.

The fifth race was generously titled "The DRF FormBlog convention," and our group was ushered to the paddock for an up-close and personal view of the horses.  There, Jessica graciously posed for pictures and signed some autographs for some of the bloggers.
chicago gerry handed over a Sheriff’s badge for me to wear and I proudly pinned it to my shirt for the winner's circle photo.
Candyonmymind paddles badly with her left fore, but she found a field she could handle, rallying from off the pace to score for Eddie Razo.  The track graciously gave us the winner's trophy as well as two pairs of jockey goggles for Midwest Ed's kids.

If you hear a squealing group of children after each race at Arlington, take comfort that Justin Bieber isn't performing in the vicinity.  The kids are looking for goggles and, more often than not, the winning rider will oblige.  It's a sweet gesture, one that the kids will remember for a long time.  Hopefully, it will spur them back to the track when they're older.

Prior to the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity, Steve Taylor introduced me to Mike Campbell, the President of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horseman's Association, and trainer of Steve's horses.  Mike seems like a good guy and he has some interesting ideas on how to get new people interested in horse ownership.  I look forward to talking to him in the future.
Major Gain won his maiden in the Futurity for Alvarado and trainer Wayne Catalano despite failing to switch leads in the stretch.  Caleb's Posse couldn't stay the one-turn mile.

When handicapping claimers at a marathon distance, it's often wise to play the runner(s) that have previously proven effective at a strong route of ground.  In the seventh race, a 12-furlong event on the polytrack, the only two runners in the race with a win at 10 furlongs or greater were Big Al and Rumor Has It.  Both were dropping out of the Grade 3 Stars N Stripes on August 21, a race in which Big Al finished 17 lengths ahead of Rumor Has It.  Big Al won by five in track record time, and paid $14.60 to win.  I didn't practice what I preached and my runner faltered after 10 furlongs.

I went down to the paddock with Dennis of Moline prior to the Arlington-Washington Lassie and we got a good look at the juvenile fillies.  Wonderlandbynight made a nice impression for trainer Michael Reavis and she rallied from off the pace to win the Grade 3 event.  Honey Chile was cold on the tote early and only mustered an even rally.

After the finale, we headed over to the Anthem Grill for a nice dinner.  I had some laughs with Bear, Jim Tully, Dennis and Rose of Moline, PGM, chicago gerry (who gave me a black cowboy hat to complete the Sheriff’s ensemble), the McMannis', Steve Taylor, and the rest of the group.

We all got together prior to the Sunday card and the FormBloggers were on target.  During the roundtable, SR Vegas gave out fifth-race winner Ship's Cabin at $47.40.
PGM liked Call to Glory, the winner of the sixth at $21.60, among his several good-priced winners and Steve Taylor knocked down the late Pick Four at $586.20 for each dollar invested.  Turnbackthealarm showed her paddock prowess by noticing a bad case of skin rash on Happiness Is, who faltered to third at 7-2 in the feature.   More importantly, the sun was shining, the group was smiling, and everyone seemed to have a good time, both at the track and at the post-race dinner.

I can safely say that if blogs are measured by the people that frequent them, then FormBlog is first-class all the way.

Thanks to PGM, Steve Taylor and chicago gerry for organizing the convention.  Its success is due to their hard work.  I'd also like to thank all of the attendees.  It was great to meet and get to know each and every one of you and I think most folks went home with at least one raffle prize.
Now, let's do it again!

***

I'm sorry that there won't be a ton of time to get ready for tomorrow's HandiGambling exercise, but congrats to Jim Peregoy for winning last week's race.  He selects the eighth race at Belmont.
***PAST PERFORMANCES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG POSTING***

Remember that you have a mythical $100 with which to wager on the race, and the entrant with the highest money total will receive a "Monthly Enhanced 60-Card Past Performance Plan." Anyone going over the $100 limit will be disqualified. Please post your plays and analysis to the blog. In the event of a tie, the earliest post gets first preference. One entry per person please. I reserve the right to approve or deny any entries

I know that there is a time issue for some of you, but let's remember why we began the HandiGambling races in the first place. The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses, and why we're betting them the way we are. I'm not asking for a novel, but if you could spare a sentence or two outlining your handicapping angles, and thought processes about wagering, it would be appreciated.

Best of luck to all.

Back tomorrow with the HG analysis.  Thursday, I'll get to questions, comments, and top Beyers of the week.

Take care,

Dan

HG 202, Geez..I could bet this race many ways..But, I'm late in gettting it in, so I'll have to digress a bit.. -#2 Stanford Dolly> seems much the best & class of the race, currently---Even though she's raced 35 times, if she presses or stalks she should handle these. -#4 Pleasant Sister> 3 straight improving races. -#3 Crafty Gem>seems the speed, but looks cheap by this races' standard. Runs BIG @ Belmont.. -#8 A Smart Judge> If he lays off the pace, he can close on those who falter.. Was goona play tri's 2, w/all, w1 & a 2, w/1,w/all..but: $2 Tri Key> 2/w 3,4,8= $12 $1 Tri Box> 3/4/8 = $6 $82 Straight Exacta 2 over 4=$82 Total $100>>>>

Mike A, "4-1....8-1, does it matter? Oh I think it often does when it comes to first-time starters, because the connections will often lay some money on firsters they think will pop first time out. Poor Mackeral Snapper, not only does he have to carry that less than dignified name, you've suggested throwing him back. LOL After all, it could have been a number of things. Maybe he doesn't like turf or like to sprint. And he certainly didn't get out of the gate well. Who knows, he may end up winning the 2011 Kentucky Derby. :) Annie

HG 202: It looks to me like four of these are better than the others, so I'll try my Super again. 1- STAR ORCHID - Dominquez and Asmussen! Coming off her life-time best Beyer and has run well at this level. 2- STANFORD DOLLY - Very consistent on any surface. JV rides for Bruce Levine. 6- VAUGHNDIDIT - Seems to be the best speed in here . Good jockey/trainer team. 9- CONGA BELLE - It's Richard Dutrow, and post race works are good. $4 Super Box 1,2,6,9 = $96 $4 Win #6 Good luck all! Michael Martinez Fund I just spoke to the Chaplain at Golden Gate Fields about whatever is being set up for Michael Martinez (he was actually with Michael when I called). Nothing is set up yet, but he is hopeful that it will be by the end of today. He is apparently receiving "dozens" of calls about the subject. He will let me know later in the day (I have his Cell #-little does he realize how I will hound him if necessary). I'll post the information on the FormBlog as soon as I know. Thank you to all of you who have asked about a Fund.

HG202 Very sorry to hear about the tragic M. Martinez accident. I will use 3 horses in the HG contest: #2 Stanford Dolly - very consistent. In the money last 10 races. 5 more lifetime wins than any other horse in the field. And competitive beyrers. Only question - will she like big sandy ? #6 Vaughndidit - Good speed and nice results at Belmont. #9 Conga Bella - Another who seems to like Belmont. I will use #2 over and under 6 and 9 as follows: $25 ex box 2/6,9 Good luck to all ! Dick W

baltimore brian Horseplayer Magazine and Customer Service is an absolute oxymoron. They have no customer service at all-a complete shutout. I have subscribed to the magazine from the very first issue-they have never responded to an email, phone call, and even a public ad I once placed trying to get hold of them. So I have no advice other than to keep trying. There is a rainbow at the end, though-this has happened to me and two other people-I have received the magazine for around ten years-maybe a little less-I have paid for exactly one year of subscriptions, and yet, I continue to receive the magazine. I have tried to give them my credit card to renew-no response. The point is, if you can ever get that first issue delivered, you're in it for life. Ask Calvin Carter who he knows-he has been published a couple of times this year-maybe he knows someone you can contact.

Hello all FormBloggers, I'm happy to see that a wonderful time was had by all at the convention. Hopefully, there will be a next year, and I'll be able to make it out. Does anyone on the blog know someone who works for Horseplayer magazine? For my birthday (which was back in May), I was given a subscription. I have yet to receive my first issue (which was supposed to be the July/August edition), and have yet to get a response from anyone at the magazine to explain why I haven't got my first issue yet. I've tried calling and e-mailing to no avail. As someone who is new to the sport, I have to say that through the limited dealings I've had with companies marketing horse racing products (DRF excluded), customer service is lacking badly. In a niche market, particularly one that is declining, taking care of the existing customer base should be paramount. Sorry for the small rant. Good luck on the HG this week. I'll be back later to post my picks. Brian

Pleasant Sister, number 4 in the 8th is my selection. Second start off a layoff and she also appears to have made two moves in her last, a 7 furlong race, which is extremely tough for a horse coming off a break. Her Beyers may be a little weak, but she may be reaching a new peak late as a 4 year old. I will play 60 dollars to win on number 4, and a 5 dollar exacta, all with 4.

HG 202 Star Orchid has demonstrated consistent improvement from her debut. Her last race was very impressive and she looked better than the winner if you consider the ground she lost by going wide her entire trip. If she repeats her last race performance she has a solid chance to defeat this group. Staford Dolly is a consistent performer who figures to hit the board. The notation reads ‘bobbled start,’ which may be a bit misleading if you watched the race as the bobble was very minor and didn’t appear to have any marked impact. She appears to be the logical favorite, but she’s definitely worth betting against as her decisive advantage is consistency. There are other competitors who have put up comparable efforts on their best days. Her consistency makes her hard to leave out of exotics, however. Crafty Gem’s last effort was very impressive at 7 Furlongs. The company was somewhat suspect and she had an easy trip earning a 73 BSF. Her trainer, Cohen, has been generating noteworthy results (A rating for sprints on Turbo Super Stats). While Crafty Gem has recently demonstrated modest improvement it has been: A) at longer distances B) not substantial enough to overcome the talent disparity between her and her competition C) unlikely to continue spike upwards given her past performance record and age. I feel the last race was more likely the culmination of an improved training cycle. Despite her connections and recent improvement, I think asking for a win is too much. I suspect she will need to exceed her last effort just to qualify for a minor award. Pass. Pleasant Sister’s last two races are noteworthy as she earned two of her lifetime best Beyer Speed Figures (70, 74). She is 2 for 15 lifetime, but has hit the boards in eight of efforts. It should be added that she’s faced a lot of sub-par competition including six maiden races (she finally burst through at the 12,500 level) and a litany of cheap N2L/N3L claiming races. This race is probably out of her reach. Sorority Sister appears to be on a downward spiral. Even though she faced tougher competition than some of her foes, that was earlier in her career. She’s benefited from competent trainers and still hasn’t been able to pull it together. Pass. Vaughndidit had a rough outing in her last start at Saratoga. She was never able to recover after stumbling at the start. She deserves consideration as she’s won 3 of 5 starts at Belmont; before her last race at Saratoga she won two in a row at Belmont at today’s distance of 6F. She finished with BSF’s in the mid 70’s. However, she appears outmatched by some of the others unless she produces a lifetime best performance. Nevertheless, she’s definitely capable of stealing a minor award. Fivefifteen looks awkwardly placed. Her lifetime best BSF is 65 in 16 outings. She ships in from Finger Lakes and reverts back to a sprint after six consecutive route races. She appears woefully overmatched. Pass. ASmartJudge is probably not a smart bet. Her last three efforts were the best of her career, but she was facing easy company relative to her opponents. She broke her maiden three races back, after nine unsuccessful efforts. Pass. CongaBella just came off a dismal effort at Saratoga, finishing dead last and losing by 23.5 lengths. Her abysmal effort was preceded by a set of equally flat workouts. Prior to the race, she put together a string of impressive efforts including: breaking her maiden by 8.5 lengths in a 35K race, a 2nd place nose decision and 82 BSF in a 50K allowance race at Belmont (at today’s distance), and two 3rd place finishes in tough 78K allowance races at Monmouth. Her races at Monmouth were at 8.5F and she should benefit from a return to 6F. At three years old she’s the baby in the race. She’ll get a 4lb weight break as she carries 116 to her opponents 120lb assignment. She recently had a modest workout (1st of 5) and benefits from a great jockey/trainer combo. She looks like the value in this race. Bet: Conga Bell $50 win. $24 exact box Congabell/Star Orchid $2 Superfecta: Congabell/Star Orchid/StafordDolly/Vaughndidit Jeffrey J (sorry if I exceeded HG protocol for length)

HG 202 A field of 8 with only three required toss entrants: 7-Fivefifteen has a 5% rider and never exceded 65 on the Beyer scale. 8-A Smart Judge has Beyers that are just as dismal and a 7% trainer. 3-Crafty Gem has a trainer who is 4 for 48 and he won his last race on 7/18. Hard to see him winning 2 straight with this critter and both wins would be off layoffs. Of the 5 remaining, hard to go against the chalky 1 and 2 horses with their high % connections. 1-Star Orchid has nine dirt races and has 3 wins and 2 2nd place finishes in those nine heats. 2-Stanford Dolly is 19 for 35 lifetime in the exacta. Unlike Star Orchid who has only one Beyer showing over 80, this mare runs 80+ Beyers on a regular basis. However, note that of her 11 lifetime wins, only one was on a dirt track. The rest are turf and synthetic. 4-Pleasant Sister tops out at a 74 Beyer. With 5 of 9 in the exacta at this distance, cannot elimnate. 6-Vaughdidit has an excuse for last and is 5 of 6 in the exacta at this distance. The 75 top Beyer does not excite me. 9-Conga Bella was trounced by the favorite in last and would require me to forgive too much for top spot on ticket. I will use the 1-Star Orchid as my key. Without turf starts, he is 3 for 8 and is lightly raced at 6F with good connections. $20 Exacta 1 over 2=$20 $10 Exacta 1 over 4, 6, 9 = $30 $10 Exacta 4, 6, 9 over 1 = $30 $2.00 Trifecta # 1,2 WT # 1,2,4,9 WT # 4,9 =$16 $2 Exacta Box 4-9 = $4

HG 202: $100 to win on the 6, Vaughndidit. Always tough at Belmont, think he'll step up and have a good day. Seems to be getting better
Whackymacky More than 1 year ago
Like I said in an earlier post. You would see a bomber in the first few days at Belmont. Well Mr. Espinoza got loose on the lead with a 57-1 shot and shocked them all and finished first and paid $116 to Win!!!! Saratoga Shipper showed them. This 4 year old filly trained by Faustino Ramos lit up the board on day 2. Hard to believe that the Pick 6 was hit on the day!!! About the Twirling Candy, the Horse should have been DQ'd. Simple as that. Totally bothered Summer Movie and his right to a fair path to run. What if this happened 500 yards out of the starting gate?? The issue at hand was that Twirling Canding had over $400K in the SHOW POOL!!!!!! If that Horse was taken down, they would have had a RIOT. They took the easy way out and left it alone. No guts!!! How many issues have the stewards had at Del Mar over the meet?? 5-7?? Watch the replay again. I don't care where the foul happened. A foul is a foul!! Whackymacky Out!!!

"Al Khali overcame the horrendous ride..." if EVER a horse has had to overcome jockey ineptitude throughout an entire career, this is the horse. I've been moaning about rides on this poor animal since the Pletcher/Arroyo!!??! days, and man, don't get me started... how I wish he had managed to lose yet again from a pitiful ride, and given me a serious price in the BC, (which he had better be planning on!). But the good news is that Leparoux didn't take the mount that day and won't show up in the pps, (although hopefully he, or some other capable turf Jock will end up on his back that day.) I know, there are some who will say he has had enough bad rides that he has something to do with it, well, just one more time I'd like him to get a nice, smart, smooth ride - maybe at 12 or 15-1 ? just in passing, if Dylbert manages to lose HG this week by the one dollar difference between his exacta and Alan's (posted 6 minutes later), THAT would be a bad beat...

HDG: If Stanford Dolly does not bobble at the start and comes close to repeating the rest of her last race at Saratoga, she will be very hard to beat. Vaughndidit will also be very tough if she returns to her Belmont form. Star Orchid is dangerous, but I am leaving her off my ticket as I am hoping she will not like the rail, does not care for Belmont's strip, and/or is better at a longer distance. Throwing in Pleasant Sister (the other Barbara charge who is stepping in up in class but may get a piece as she is in good form and has run well here before) and Conga Bella (last was too bad to believe and any rebound could get her a slice) underneath. The play: $25 TRI PW: 2-6 / 2-6 / 4-9 Thoughts and prayers to injured jockey Martinez and his family. Dale

HG 202 I'll key the #9 Conga Bella on top. Stalking trip outside of the speed, and Leparoux guarantees a patient ride. Hoping that the #1 sends from the inside and battles the #6. Will play like this: $25 ex 9 / 2,6 $25 ex box 2-9 Good luck all!

Chalky and I are so jealous of you Formblog conventees! Congratulations on your great weekend! Dan is right...we are a swell bunch of people! HG SEPTEMBER @ BIG SANDY SELECTIONS: #6 Vaughndidit -> had no chance after a poor start at the Spa last out. Returns to Big Sandy where she is 2 for 2 at the distance this year. ON TOP #9 CongaBella -> just missed here at 6f in the spring, drops a step back into starter allowance level. UNDER WAGER: Straight exacta of the two selections. $100EX #6/9 $100 TOTAL Good luck tomorrow!!

HG 202 Looks like Lezcano + Leparoux + experienced 6 panel sprinters = 6-9 cold $99 exacta. #6 Vaughndidit returns to 6 furlong sprinting and should duel #1 Star Orchid and prevail, and completing the exacta #9 Conga Bella will have disposed of #2 Stanford Dolly which yields cold $1 superfecta: 6 - 9 - 1 - 2 Best of luck to all -- especially those playing with real $$$ tomorrow...

Before I get into the recap of the FormBlog Convention, I wanted to extend my gratitude for all the thanks I've received for making the FormBlog Convention happen. So, Cue the Credits! A big thanks to ...Chicago Gerry for recommending Anthem Grill, the site of our two dinner functions. I'll recommend it anytime for a nice, post-AP meal. And thanks again for a ride back to the city on Saturday night :) ...Steve Taylor, who served as a wonderful go between between myself and Arlington Park, and helped me get in contact with one (very, very) helpful AP employee. ...Allison Sharfman, VIP Player Development Coordinator at Arlington Park, thanks for being that very very helpful Arlington Park employee who provided us with wonderful seats, a race in our name, and plenty of memories. --TurnBackTheAlarm, for being an exceptional hostess at our event, and once again for transportation on both days. --To all the attendees, that made the FBC an event to remember! Nearly twenty people attended the inaugural FormBlog Convention on Saturday, and I won't take away from Dan's (or anyone else's) recap, but I will mention some personal stories of my own. "Meet the Owner" After the fifth race on Saturday (the namesake race, which was an N2L claimer), I was heading back to the paddock with Mike Shutty, owner of (rival site) Horse Racing Nation. As we discuss the Arlington Washington Futurity (we both liked Rough Sailing, who finished second) among other topics, he takes me to where Richard L. Duchossois is. First reaction: THE Richard L. Duchossis? It's him, the man who owned Arlington Park and created such a wonderful host for the FormBlog Convention. And after an introduction from Mike, we shook hands. I did not have the "I am never washing this hand moment", but instead a WOW moment. I wish had something better to say at the time, but if I did, I would complement the track he owned. "Winning a race at your own Convention" Okay, so Rough Sailing didn't win the A-W Futurity. Big deal. But as the Lassie came on Saturday, I was in danger of going oh-fer on the day. Until I looked back at my picks for the Arlington Washington Lassie. I liked Wonderlandbynight, who won a stakes in Canada the start prior. Yes she was the mild favorite. But at least I would have picked something right at my own event. And though that runner was the favorite at just under 7-2, I rooted hard for that runner, and I jumped high when I had it. And so did Chicago Gerry, who was flammable all day Saturday. And in retrospect, I had nothing to be worried about, when I gave out Call to Glory ($21.80) and Romin Robin ($16.80) on Sunday. "The Revenge of Captain Fluffy" Once upon a time, I gave out Captain Fluffy as a winner in a $25K Maiden Claimer at Hawthorne. Well, she did not win that day at Hawt Captain Fluffy may still be a maiden, but the group behind us loved the Captain. Not so for Carol W., who had a tough beat. Luckily, she recovered when she snuffed out Rombin Robin in the day's featured 8th race.

Eighth Race at Belmont looks like a winner for 2. Stanford Dolly @ 2-1 with Johnny V and Bruce Levine plus its his third race in the cycle. The 4. Pleasant Sister @ 8-1 has Jockey Garcia who is 29% so far this meet and the 6. Vaughndidit @ 5-1 has managed to stay in the money 6/8 times on fast tracks. $50 Trifecta 2-4-6 and $50 trifecta 2-6-4= $100

Had a great time at the Formblog Convention. Shared a box with Bear, ALL, Midwest Ed and his two boys and we had a buncha laughs and shared a common winner when Al Khali overcame the horrendous ride by my nemesis jock, Alan Garcia. At dinner I was seated between Dan and Scott McMannis. Talk about a load of racing knowledge. Dan and Scott know a little bit too about this game. Flamed out in the Handicapping contest but, hey, I'm a former Handigambling winner so who needs the Series. HG 202. Looks like a two horse race. Straight $100 exacta 1/2

I'll take a stab at the HG now, I'll be in Southampton tomorrow and I know I won't be home in time. HG 202.....Of the horses I thought would contend here Star Orchid, Stanford Dolly, Vaughndidit and Conga Belle, I eliminated Stanford Dolly ( a Levine trainee, tough throw out) and Conga Belle. My reasoning in eliminating those two was The field they ran against in last is suspect in my mind, I don't believe that race was that good. It was tuff leaving out Conga Belle as this race sets up nicely for her and she may have been "out for air" in her last. That leaves me with Star Orchid and Vaughndidit. Given Star Orchid is on the rail and Vaughndidit has better gate speed, it may leave Star Orchid playing more of a catchup game than she wants. There is other speed signed on here, but I just believe Vaughndidit is "better" than them. Of course Star Orchid's last at MTH was much better than what you would believe a 32,000 clm'r to be. Many in that race are high money earners and regular performers in Overnights. I'm taking a chance that the 1 hole makes the difference and I will put Vaughndidit on top of Star Orchid. HG 202 100.00 exacta 6-1. I looked over some of the turf races for tomorrow at Belmont. Without knowing course conditions (I figure firm) or scratches Here's what I like. Belmont 1st. I only liked two in here and of them I only like it one way. Talented Princess over Fourth Chapter Belmont 7th, I'm just going to list these in PP order, then put a "k" next to the horse I would key on. Nacho Corona Romans Reward "k" Idol Image The other race I like is a maiden affair.......dang if I can remember the race, I believe it's the fifth. Wild Banshee Maux Money "k" Lady Whimsical Well good luck to any and all who bet tomorrow, on their own......take my picks as a guide line, because to be honest if I'm at the track, after scratches I could change my mind.......confusing ain't it?? HG 202: Stanford Dolly runs on any surface and has a BSF advantage over just about everybody here. Consistent and should easily pass the early speed in the stretch. Conga belle ran her best race at these conditions and seems to be working back into form. I'll play them with the 1 who is the only other horse to hit the 80 BSF mark recently. $50 TRI 2/1,9/1,9

Dan- Would you please post the PP's for Zenyatta, Blame, Quality Road, Lookin at Lucky, and Twirling Candy? These are the probable major players in the BC Classic, though we'll likely (if recent history holds) have a couple of defections in the next six weeks. I believe with the cynicism toward synthetics, Moss' ultra conservative 2009-10 campaigns, and the slow-to-glacial pace set in her races resulting in low Beyers that Z will be at least 2/1, possibly a tad higher. Those odds, given a dry track, make her an uber attractive last leg on multiple BC parlays. Some may characterize looking at a race a month and a half from now as "stupid". It is not. It's similiar to preparing for a day in court when you have a scheduled appearance on a set issue. Now if we we're talking about a NW1 allowance race it might be a reach but in the Classic there are maybe 15-20 horses worldwide even considered for the race so preliminary research can begin now, including forecasting how the wagering may break. I'll be rooting for Blame, Lookin at Lucky, and Twirling Candy to put up big Beyers while easily winning their final tuneups, therefore enhancing Z's odds. It's simply preparation.

Dan; I really do wish I had been able to attend the FormBlog Convention, but I am enjoying reading all of the stories. I am not at all surprised that the folks that attended are such a classy group, afterall, you are the one who has built this place and brought everyone together with your horse racing expertise, situational wisdom, civility, and handicapping prowess. What you have here in FormBlog is a reflection of you. You should be proud of that.

Curt V I'm game any weekend, best way to get me is email.......I don't mind if anyone on the blog has it so here it is hrlymk49@aol.com. that's the one I use for friends and racing matters...... I'll remember M. Martinez in my talk with the big guy tonight......yes that's right, we" talk" every night. Annie.......4-1.....8-1, does it matter? The one looked good, bred well and sure looked the part in the Post parade. I'd be more inclined to bet the "Mackeral" on the stretchout or even on the dirt. I'm not sure sprinting is his cup of tea......he looked like a fish out of water. Dan, I love reading your stuff.........Mike A

HG202 Bet: 8th at Belmont, $100 imaginary money bet below $100 to Win on Sorority Sister Reasoning: Seems like this race has a lot of front runners. Perhaps the front runners will be compromised by the pace and allow Sorority Sister to close on them. This horse has been improving and has had plenty of recent exercise and races to be physically ready for this one.

Arlington Park is a beautiful racetrack. Ane Scott McMannis is a friend. But Arlington charges an enormous entrance fee. Over triple that of Saratoga. (which has the best racing in the country and a real dirt surface. Bob Bertz

HG 202 I think this is a good race to take a stab against (2) STANFORD DOLLY. I like (6) VAUGHNDIDIT and her experience over the Belmont dirt. She retains Lezcano, her top rider, and turns back both in class and distance this race. Toss out last race after a bad start. This horse is tough when she is out on the lead and that's where she will be with Lezcano on board in this field. I'll go with a trifecta play this race using mainly (2) STANFORD DOLLY, (4) PLEASANT SISTER, and (8) A SMART JUDGE. (2) STANFORD DOLLY is an obvious use in exotics. (4) PLEASANT SISTER should be running a good race late and could hit the board at a good price. (8) A SMART JUDGE showed enough last race for Castellano to stay aboard. For the rest of them: (1) STAR ORCHID is worth a look but I'll show her only for some crust. I do not like the last work and she seems to be out of her realm in allowance company. (9) CONGA BELLA has steadily regressed and Lezcano would not have jumped off if he thought this horse could beat (6) VAUGHNDIDIT. I'll still play this one deep on the ticket. (3) CRAFTY GEM, (5) SORORITY SISTER, and (7) FIVEFIFTEEN all look overmatched in this field. The play: $8 trifecta 6/2,4,8/1,2,4,8,9 and $4 win 6 for $100

HG202 My play is a $50 tri-key #2 Stanford Dolly with #6 Vaughndidit & #9 Conga Bella. Looks like #2 is class of the field #6 consistently on the board at the distance & #9 should be closing late.

Blackstone, What a ghastly accident for Michael Martinez. It's truly a dangerous way to make a living. And I didn't see anything about it on drf, except for your post. Thanks for letting us know, and if you hear some good news about it, please keep us up to date.

HG202 There appears to be adequate pace here to give all types a shot. I prefer two runners cutting back in distance, both of them may be best at 6 panels. The 9, Conga Belle, is coming off a terrible outing, but the return without a panic drop and some decent works make me think the last was a legit throw out. The favorite, Stanford Dolly, a consistent sort with 11 straight money finshes, should find this field to her liking. She beat the 9 by 20 lengths last out. Look for Conga Belle to be the main threat today. My wager is $100 exacta 2-9. Thanks; wish I could have joined you at Arington. DSully

Jeff T That is a very nice thought to help Michael Martinez and his family. I don't mean to be vague, but I'm somewhat plugged in to local jockey community. I'll try to find out what is being done, and what can be done. I'll let you (and everyone) know through this Blog if I find out anything.
