Churchill Downs: Jockey Garrett Gomez goes two-for-two Wednesday in first day back riding from injury

Jockey Garrett Gomez, away from riding since winning the Breeders' Cup Classic on Blame Nov. 6, returned in style Wednesday, winning aboard both of his mounts.

Happy Week kicked things off by taking a third-level allowance in race three, paying $3.80, and Warrior Poet later won the eighth race, a first-level allowance, in a race taken off the turf. The latter paid $7.20.

Both horses won on the lead, and the Gomez never looked like a jockey who had been nursing a sore shoulder. He was aggressive and active in the stretch after getting his mounts to settle kindly.

Gomez had injured his shoulder when a horse he was riding broke down in a turf race Nov. 4, the Thursday before the Breeders' Cup. He returned to ride Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 5 for the Breeders' Cup - winning three Breeders' Cup races, including the big one - but then took time off to rest his badly bruised shoulder.
