Churchill Downs: Bella Medaglia, bet down late, wins featured seventh race

It seems that with a minute or two before post time for the seventh race, a lot of horseplayers got the same idea: bet number four, Bella Medaglia.

The 2-1 second choice in the wagering as she walked toward the gate, she took a flood of late money, going off as the eventual even-money choice.

She ran to those short odds, dominating a second-level allowance field to win handily. She raced 1 1/8 miles on a fast dirt track in 1:50.74, a sharp time over a track that was not particularly quick.

A 4-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro trained by Bret Calhoun, Bella Medaglia ($4) is not the most efficient mover – she paddles her front left leg – but she’s a good filly despite her action. She is already twice stakes placed, and if she runs like she did in the seventh race Thursday, a stakes win likely isn’t far off in the future.

Miguel Mena rode the winner, his second victory on the card.
