Calder: Varitek a good catch in the third

Anybody who caught Varitek in the third race was well rewarded. The speedster got loose on the lead and never looked back, cruising to an easy win to the tune of a $91.40 mutuel. The victory was the in 14 tries on the year and just the third in 53 career starts for the son of Quiet American who was originally owned by Scott Savin but now flies the colors of Emmy Gaffney whose husband Ron Gaffney was notching his first win in 2010.

Varitek followed on the heels of Great Victorian's $35.60 upset in the second for trainer Monte Brinsley and apprentice Angel Moreno.

The two longshots were sandwiched between popular tallies by Ritual in the opener and the 3-5 Bull Dozer in the fourth race.

Back to the grass(firm, rail out 10 feet) for the third time in five races with Wildcatter and The Waco Kid both currently co-favored at 8-5.
