Calder: Off turf, four late scratches in 5th

Email

Showing just a total disregard for the bettors, the fifth race was taken off the turf two minutes before scheduled post time. Even though the sun is shining brightly and the second race was already run over the course.   The state steward  said the rider's voted not to ride on a turf course that has been chewed beyond recognition but waiting this long to make the decision and subsequent announcement is what is so egregious on everybody's behalf. Apparently the rider's voiced their displeasure with the course after the second race but management tried to talk them out of the decision not to ride on the grass, taking long enough that bettors had already made selections and placed wagers in pick-3's beginning with both the third and fourth events based on turf form. Because of the delay in finally taking the race off the turf, those players are now stuck with their wagers.  Four horses have been scratched from the fifth race, Black Honor, A Little Off, Albany Indian and Bureaucat.  The remaining six starters are still in the paddock so there is no telling what the new post time will be for the fifth.

Race eight is also off the grass. Expect numerous scratches as well to be orthcoming.
