CALDER: Putting 'em asleep on the lead

EmailThat's what jockey Jeffrey Sanchez did aboard Mean Sax to capture the Mecke Stakes. With Jet Propulsion scratched, as expected, the Mecke became a paceless affair and Sanchez took advantage by taking Mean Sax right to the lead and slowing the pace down to a relative walk, the opening half in :24.80 and half in :49.60 leaving plenty in the tank when the well backed Black Scorpion came a calling on the final turn and into the stretch.  Meanwhile Edgar Perez on Fearless Eagle, who led early in the Grade 3 Miami Mile Hcp. on opening day, decided to take back off the leader, wound up parked four wide turning for home and ultimately had no chance.
