Calder: From out of the clouds

Sweet Dreamin could certainly have been used, if only by default purposes only, in the fifth race but hard to imagine the first time starter who had been hard used to work :36 and change from the gate on May 22, would come flying out of nowhere to win the maiden $25,000 claimer for 2-year-old fillies. Of course Sweet Dreamin' cause was helped when the 7-5 favorite, Exclusively Maria, absolutely collapsed and stopped after turning for home five or six lengths in front. Sweet Dreamin paid $9.40. Final time for five furlongs was a slow 1:02.20.

Sweet Dreamin was the second straight dead closer to win on the card, following 13-1 Georgian who also rallied from well back to upset the fourth race. She won at the expense of another stopping favorite, Subtitles, who appeared home free when well clear on the lead near midstretch.

The afternoon's main event went to Performing who slowed the pace down to a walk in the third then was all out to hold off a late try from Dreamed To Dream who attended the winner throughout. Academicienne lost all chance when ducked out sharply at the start, compounding her woes later by switching leads a couple of times down the stretch.
