Calder: One win, one scratch for Canani

Trainer Nick Canani and owner Frank Calabrese figure to be dominant forces here the remainder of the year. The pair had an up and down day on Thursday, winning the opener with Don Misil before having Friendly Selection scratch after flipping in the gate just prior to the fifth race. Fortunately the horse appeared to escape serious injury after getting badly hung up underneath the gate for several minutes.  Don Misil returned a surprisingly generous 3-1 for his victory but don't expect that kind of price too often on any future Canani-Calabrese runners around these parts.

No real bias over the main track through the first five races on the card, only three of which were decided on dirt. It does look like racing forwardly would prove beneficial.

ON the way to the gate for a wide open 6th with Sir Charlie a very tepid 3-1 favorite.
