Calder: No turf again

Turf course closed for business today, continuing what has been a very tough month for daisycuttersin south Florida. They did get one race in over the turf yesterday before more rain fell and the horses chewed the course up pretty good even at that.  Will probably be Thursday before there is any hope of getting back on the grass.

The loss of the turf has taken its toll on several of the races originally scheduled for the grass. The fourth has scratched down to just five starters from 10 originally entered and the tenth lost five of nine and will feature just a four horse field topped by stakes types You Luckie Mann and How's Your Halo.

The outside was the place to be at the end of Friday's card and from the looks of the opener, a similar bias might prevail today although obviously too early to tell with any certainty right now. Atomic Flea, a generous 5-2 on the class drop, sat the perfect trip tipping four wide on the bend to outfinish wide running Mi D'Ruler. Magic In the Stars bet down from second choice on the line to even money but had little chance after jockey Carlos Olivero snugged her back following a good beginning and angled her down near the inside where she encountered trouble on the bend.
