Calder: New course record

Chosen Empire, a mid-level conditioned claimer with just one victory in 15 previous starts, just shattered the one mile turf course record when drawing off to an easy victory in the ninth race.  And he did so over a course officially listed by track officials as "good" at the time.

Despite setting a contested pace and fractons of :22.40, :45.20 and 1:08.80 over the "good" course, Chosen Empire drew off at will completing the distance in 1:33.07 which was nearly three ticks quicker than the previous mark of 1:33.66 set by Dillonmyboy last October.  For records sake, the Equibase chart crew listed the course as "firm" on the official charts for the race.  Chosen Empire is trained by Nick Canani for owner Frank Calabrese and paid $4.00.

An hour earlier, maiden filly and mares went 1:34.93 over the same course after early splits of :22 and change, :45 and change and 1:09.20 with Callmethesqueeze exploding from off the pace to win going away. The official rating for the course for that race will also be listed as firm in the chart.
