Calder: Maestre wakes up

Email

After going winless from the first 23 starters he'd sent out in 2011, trainer Pedro Maestre suddenly got red hot with back to back victories in the ninth and tenth races.  Maestre's mini streak began with Mae Ruler who earned her diploma in her 11th try going 7.5 furlongs on the turf.  The barn came right back 30 mins later to register another upset with Consolacion Sur, who'd won just once in 28 previous tries. Jockey Eddie Dominguez, who had just one victory himself entering Saturday's card, was aboard both winners.

Little Nick has opened as the 1-5 favorite in the $55,000 Champali Stakes on the grass. Paco Lopez, who earlier won the In Summation with the odds on Manicero, has the mount.
