CALDER: Long day begins with disastrous trip for favorite

Email

Honey Honey Honey looked shaky at best going into the opener when dropped in for a $5,000 price tag off a six month layoff. The former stakes caliber gelding was bet to 1-2 for his return and whatever chance he might have had was taken away by just another horrendous ride from seven pound bug Jose Angel Garcia who ran him into the rail approaching the far turn and then steadied sharply in traffic trying to slip inside the tiring leaders near the sixteenth pole.  D'clver Cat, who couldn't hold an easy lead against conditioned claimers two weeks ago, outfinished the 10-year-old Champagne Account to win the race.  There were six claims dropped for Honey Honey Honey who went to trainer Fred Warren.

The main track is fast but was like quicksand for workouts this morning and it will be interesting to see how it holds up under today's blazing sun. The turf course is listed as "good" with the rail down.
