Calder: Improbable result in nightcap

Email

Hard to come up with the 30-1 Root For the Cat who rallied to win the finale affter having been beaten an average of more than 16 lengths in her last three starts and a dozen lengths while finsihing tenth off 12 against same kind three weeks earlier. The victory was just the fifth of the meet for jockey Pedro Monterrey Jr. and first this year for trainer Sharon  McGlinchey.

The result was a little more improbable than that of the Grade 3 Tropical Turf Handicap which was won by the 15-1 Twilight Meteor in wire to wire fashion although the $32.00 payoff rare air for a horse trained by Marty Wolfson. Jockey Luis Saez took advantage o a paceless race to put Twilight Meteor right on the lead after which the pair never looked back before holding off Rahy's Attorney and Baletti. Some dull tries in the race by the likes of 7-2 Midnight Mischief and co-highweight Never On Sunday.
