Calder: Hot maidens not so hot

Email

First time starters Nasty Rumor and Blageuse were pounded to 9-5 for their debuts in the seventh race but neither wound up hitting the board in the maiden special weight dash for 2-year-old fillies.  Chicago Nights broke like a shot, controled the pace, cruised to an easy win with overlooked firster Talk OF The Night rallying up the rail to finish second.  Chicago Nights, who'd run well in her only previous start, returned a generous $23.00 for the victory.  Nasty Rumor stumbled briefly at the break, recovered to striking position into the stretch, angled five wide and had no further response. Blageuse made a little run three wide on the turn but had nothing left after a half and finished well back for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Speed has fared well thus far over the main track with only Portrature rallying from well off the lead to find the winner's circle, doing so at the expense of the 2-1 pace setter Z Breeze in the fifth race.
