Calder: Good no call by stewards

A couple of good no calls by the stewards today especially in the just concluded eighth race won by the 29-1 Country Green. The winner did lug in briefly despite being under lefthand whipping by apprentice Sixto Ribera but was moving clear of Annie Roe, who checked briefly and ultimately faded to fourth, at the point of the incident.  Despite losing her best stride momentarily at that point, Country Green was able to recover enough to outkick the 8-5 Marilla to the wire. The $60.20 mutuel was another in a seemingly endless string of big payoffs from the barn of trainer Manny Azpurua.

Would be remiss if not noting the late action that came in one race earlier on Act of Blues who was bet from 7-5 to 4-5 after the break. On paper, the seventh event looked like a two horse affair between Act of Blues and Tillie The Tigress and both loaded into the gate at 7-5 co-choices. Coincidentally or whatever, all that late money poured in on Act of Blues after Tillie The Tigress broke a step slow and checked back to last exiting the barrier, giving Act of Blues about a four length head start. Tillie recovered, however, blew by Act of Blues on the turn and went on to win the race and ultimately returned a seemingly generous $5.40.
